Some ” Churchy” Thoughts On Good Leadership

God is looking for good leaders more than He is ministers. There are many ministers and ministries. Good leaders are hard to find, though.

God is looking for problem solvers. Many will see the problem but few will get their hands dirty to solve it. If we are only looking for the success of our ministry without first and foremost becoming a good leader in it, we will miss God’s higher purpose. The church is full of people who rightfully see the problems but will do little to solve them. Solutions come through relating, sharing, praying,  getting dirty in the spiritual poop, confronting, giving input, a willingness to also be wrong and learn, sacrificing time and resources, serving, vulnerability, transparency,  plugging in, accessibility to others, and to know people and be known by them.   This is leadership.

Where there are cows, there is poop in the stable. Good leaders must be willing to get their hands dirty with spiritual poop. If you simply want to prophesy to the poop and stay clean you are are missing the higher calling.  If you run away from the poop without attempting to clean it up first, you are also missing God’s higher purpose.

Many will run away from the problem, but who will remain and solve it?  This is the mark of a leader.

A minister can have a ministry and gauge his or her success through the ministry, but God is not satisfied with that.

It’s impossible to accurately judge a situation without entering into relationships and spend time with the people who created it. I have discovered that I can only adequately judge a situation when I have spent real time and involvement with the people who are in it.

It’s easy to prophesy to the problem from the outside without paying the price to get involved, get your hands dirty, and solve it. As a matter of fact, a prophecy from the outside without getting involved with those to whom you are prophesying it to, will always be “only partially correct.”

Some will complain about an individual, but very few will spend time to mentor and disciple that individual. This is the call of the hour.

There are others who will run from meeting to meeting or church to church looking for the greener grass, but few will change for the better what they have been called do in the first place. As my friend Dr. Lawton Smith would say, “We need less saluting and more shooting.”

As I grow older, I am convinced that healthy church growth will only occur with relationship minded people. I feel that people are tired of “churchiness” and are looking for relationships, reality, loving confrontation to their brokenness found in mentoring.  I am tired of meetings just for meetings sake. I think that God is as well.

Heterosexuality vs Homosexuality: What Does The Holy Spirit Think?

Jesus Christ has blessed my life with people.  For thirty two years I’ve prayed for many in the power of the Holy Spirit.  I have prophesied to hundreds, prayed for hundreds sick and demonized, and participated in hundreds of meetings.  I’ve eaten caviar with the rich, reindeer with Eskimos, green chile with Pueblo Indians, fry bread with Navajos, milk and potato with Maasais, tilapia with the Luos (Mr. Obama’s tribe) goat with Kikuyus, and meat with the Congolese. I have been in mansions, cow dung manatas, the adobe homes of Pueblo Indians, the mud shacks of remote Tanzania, Navajo hogans, and the mosquito nets of Mombasa. I have preached in English, Spanish, and have had my English translated to Greek and the Greek to Swahili, Maasai, Kikuyu, Luo, Kamba, Congolese and Ugandan.

So what have I learned about the Holy Spirit as I present Him to humanity?

Homosexuality is molding an indelible fingerprint upon society.  Homosexuals hid in the proverbial closet of guilt and shame. Upon coming out, the church freaked, believing that morality was doomed. I was one of them. Homosexuals sensed the church’s rejection and became hostile to it. The conflict still brews.

So what is the Holy Spirit’s take on heterosexuality or homosexuality?

We call the none racially prejudiced, “color blind.”  The Holy Spirit is “people blind’.  Heterosexuality, homosexuality, Catholicism, Protestantism, Democrats and Republicans are labels which people create.  The Holy Spirit has no labels. To Him, people are people. He loves them all with an individualized intense passion. He is called the “hound of heaven” seeking and searching to bring humanity to His loving arms.

There are very few humans whom are not captivated by the sheer force of love, joy, and liberty demonstrated in the Holy Spirit’s power. Every one I’ve met speaks the language of love, joy, freedom and tender hearted care. Every person loves laughter and fun. Everybody, enjoys the good joke, and wants the good times.

I ministered in many an African meeting where folk did not know a lick of what I said. When the Holy Spirit shows up in power and glory, everyone suddenly understands. Interpreters are not needed. Everybody comes to be touched by Him. I stretch out my hands and need not to to speak. The same in Navajo land. The same in Tanzania, Alaska or Uganda, and the same in a Coral Gables mansion.

The Holy Spirit is the funnest, happiest and “in a good mood” Person I know. He enjoys having fun, healing, setting free, pouring out blessings, and bringing folks to the truth.

I don’t care who I minister to. If it’s a gay or a straight, the liberal, the conservative, the Catholic or Protestant, the child, or the ancient. It’s the person whom the Holy Spirit electrifies with His power.  Everybody loves it. Everybody wants more of it. Little kids who fall under the glory want to feel it again and again. The Adventist is mesmerized by God’s power and wants to get repeatedly zapped. The homosexual who is slained by the Spirit jumps up hugging and thanking the one who prayed for him. The Catholic who never felt God wants an hour of prayer.  Jesus said that if He is lifted up, He draws every human to His Presence.

Dr. Lawton Smith was a magnificent Christian. A renowned ophthalmologist, a formidable Bible teacher, and a loving human being, he recently died while evangelizing. He would say to the church; “less saluting and more shooting.”

We, the body of Christ, should do less saluting by legislating morality and more shooting of the Holy Spirit’s power.

We Are The Ones We Have Been Waiting For! : Happy Birthday America

God bless America, land that I love,
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with a light from above.

As worship ended Sunday at Doral Vineyard, Pastor Ralph Gomez played the “God Bless America” video by Martina McBride.

As hands crossed chests, and wet eyes were wiped, God spoke these above words to me.

America, the land that I love, is traversing through a night. I don’t foresee a rapid end to it. As a matter of fact, it is deepening and elongating itself, as God tests her soul. His test is one of a metal which encounters the fire and exposes the impurities, to then have them cut away.

God is so smart. He uses America’s rejection of Him to cause her to sink into gnawing despair of darkness which will bring her back to Him.

Morally, America is delving into things which take her into profound darkness. She call things which are sinful as normal and acceptable. This type of thinking is labeled reprobate.  A reprobate philosophy fails the test and is rejected. It fails because of inability to distinguish between right and wrong. It calls right wrong and wrong right. It is birthed in a heart which has rejected God.

As America despises its creator, it hardens his heart towards Him. In the callousness of the heart, the nation is alienated from the ways of its God. By this alienation, it becomes increasingly ignorant of His ways. In its ignorance, deception and darkness flourish. The culmination of thinking in deception is called a reprobate mind.

This then is the judgment of God. He says, to America, “You don’t want me, have at it.”  The process described above then follows. Yet it’s a loving God’s will that as America hits her bottom, and it will, she will cry again for Him.

We have an American government which consistently does things in opposition to God’s principles for blessing and success.  It makes hasty and impetuous decisions. It makes them in obstinacy, stubbornness and defiance. The Bible calls this a stiff neck.  It makes its decisions, dissing historical precedence for wise counsel and promotes its own set of untested agenda, also called lawlessness.

1 King 12:8  But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:

Pr 19:2 Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.

Jer 17:23 But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.

This threefold recipe is an absolute shoo in for calamity, and the coming of a perfect storm.

America is in a heck of a financial mess. More than that, America is financially bankrupt. What saves America, is that most of the world is bankrupt as well.

It’s wrong to blame the government. We must blame ourselves. It is our corporate greed, selfishness and corruption which have brought on the financial crisis. It is the rejection of God and His guidance and principles.  It’s the un renewed sinful nature actively at work.

America’s greatest ill, and the one which spurs all other woes is her rejection of God, her dependency on His wisdom and guidance, and her neglect of His Word, the Bible, as her road map.

Alas, but there is still hope. The verse to the song says:

God bless America, land that I love,
Stand beside her and guide her
Through the night with a light from above.

America is traversing through the dark night of her soul.  God will stand beside her. If there was nothing else, God does not forget the sacrifice of many who have bled and sweated and died to uphold Him and His principles, in her bosom.

The keys to America are in the hands of the church. Her darkness is sure to get dimmer. God is the consummate optimist, however. He shines in times of turbulence. He loves the crisis.  God knows that it is in watershed moments that many turn back to Him.

Isa 60:2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

The church must seize upon these times. She is the light that shines in darkness.

Mt 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.

She is the salt in the insipid and morose greyness of deception.

Mt 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

The church is God’s love letter to broken mankind marred by the illusions of sin.

Eph 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

More than ever, America cries for guidance.  America is despairing for leaders.  Just look at the many presidential hopefuls she has. Most of them leave God out of the equation of governance, a most serious mistake.

The church, however, is uniquely crafted to offer excellent leadership in these squally times.

The world is waits for the churches headship. It just doesn’t know it.

I think that it was a someone who once said, “We are the ones we have been waiting for”. How apropos is this for the church?  God is counting on the church to arise. We must grab these times and lead. We must take our place as love, salt and light.  America is saying, “Church, you are the one I have been waiting for.” Happy birthday America!

Ro 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creature (America) waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
