Eph 4:22 that you put off, concerning your former way of life, the old man which is being corrupted according to the deceitful lusts,
The old man, was our old identity.
The Greek word, palaion, is one which is old in age, and decrepit, just like a 150 year old nursing home man.
This is the old man that whole world idolizes and protects.
23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
How are we transformed out from the horrible old man?
It’s done by our renewing ourselves in the spirit of our minds.
The word for renew is the Greek word, ananeos.
Ana is preposition which means again.
Neos is someone that is young in age like baby or a teenager.
24 and that you put on the new man which was created in the likeness of God, in true righteousness and holiness.
New man is kainos.
Kainos is something that is new because it’s never been seen, or it novel or unique, or out of the box. It’s not particularly new in age like neos.
I can say that a new car came to Miami. This car is a 1920 Rolls Royce. Though it’s old in age, it’s a new car, because there is only one in Miami, and it has never been seen.
So here, God commands us to become created into a new, out of the box, novel, and unique humanity, which is none other than Christ in you.
This humanity is what people see and brings revival.
Now, let’s go to Colossians
Col 3:9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
Again, we have the old man, the palaion man, the one who is old and decrepit in age.
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
But now we see the mind of Paul, an amazingly spiritual man of God, at work.
Notice his keen play on words as compared to Ephesians.
The new man here is not kainos, but neos.
As you remember from Ephesians, neos is young in age, just like a baby or a teenager
Paul tells us that the humanity of Jesus is not only novel and unique and out of the box, but also one who is young and fresh in chronological age just like a baby or teenager.
You can claim that the Holy Spirit renews you in physical age!
In eternity, we will always be young in age but the process begins right here and right now.
It’s up to you and me how far we want to go with Jesus.
The renewing of your thinking here is not to make it young in age, but rather, novel, unique and out of the box.
So let’s summarize what Paul says.
We are commanded to totally get rid of the old, decrepit, sin laden man, which is nothing more than our old identity, before Christ came into our lives.
But now the difference comes.
In order to be created into this novel, unique, out of the box humanity, which is Christ in you, your minds must be made brand new in age.
This means that a freedom from every chain, all wrong thinking, all history, and all our all old habits must be gradually purified, by the study of God’s word and our obedience to the voice of the Spirit.
The goal is to have a brand spanking new brain.
It is one that is as clean as a new blackboard.
The history of who we were is gone, erased forever, and Christ can begin to write a new history, His Story.
The creation of the novel, out of the box, never been seen humanity, is the result of a young and fresh mind, or a clean blackboard.
In Colossians, the humanity that we are created into is a brand spanking young in age, teenage humanity which will last forever.
This humanity is created by renewing our mind to think in a new, out of the box, unique and novel way just like Jesus does.
So God wants to bless us with both humanities and both minds right here and right now.
Both are a requirement.
The new out of the box never been seen human being is created by renewing our mind to one which a baby or a teenager has.
The fresh and new in age teenage humanity is created by renewing our mind to think in a new, out of the box, unique and novel way just like Jesus does.
