Obama and Missions

What drives you more, comfort, or hunger for the Word of God? This was our Bible conference in Masat, Kenya, home of Mr. Obama. In America, we complain that it’s too far to go to a church meeting. In Masat, there was no electricity. We rented a generator which was a luxury for the folks there. The children were so grateful to sing to an electric keyboard and microphone that they worshiped Jesus with them at 4:00 AM. The nights we were there, we could not sleep because of their singing. This is not a condemnation of the American church, which I am a part of, but a reality check? Could it be that we don’t see a huge impact by the church in the USA because we lack a spirit of sacrifice, when the Lord tells us to do something? What are you and I going to do about this in 2014? Has God given you a clear strategy to impact this country with Christ?

This was our toilet. It spelled an expedition of faith as you squatted over the hole, with your pants down, while simultaneously leaning over to hold the plastic covering which flapped in the wind, so that no one could see you

The Legacy of Richard Kaufman

“Richard Kaufman who grew up in the 1970s during the “dark ages” of disability awareness. He was placed in special education classes at the start of elementary school. Determined to prove others wrong, he graduated from high school in 1985 and earned his Associate of Art degree in 1999. In 2009, he began his journey at FIU. He plans to pursue a master’s degree in mental health counseling and wants to dedicate his career to helping others. On Monday, Dec. 16 at 10 a.m. Kaufman will receive a bachelor’s degree in sociology/anthropology with a minor in religious studies.”  Florida International University

We are so proud of our friend Richard Kaufman. Richard has overcome a life of tremendous obstacles to graduate yesterday with a BS from Florida International University ( FIU)

The president of FIU recognized two people amongst the hundreds present for a life of special achievement while at FIU. One was Pastor Joseph Holbrook. The other one was Richard Kaufman. For ten minutes, he had Richard stand up while eloquently relaying to the thousands present his special achievements.

We who were part of Richard’s party were given VIP seating in the very front row. The head of the graduation event met with us personally to praise Richard’s achievements. One of Richard’s professors requested to meet with him after the commencement exercises.

Truly an amazing event for a deserving man, Richard Kaufman! GO RICHARD!

Mat 11:12  And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.

The kingdom of God is taken by spiritual violence and spiritually strong and forceful people from moment to moment snatch, seize it, and take it away as a precious bounty.

Rom 12:2  And be not conformed ( don’t follow the schematic drawing or the blueprint of this world system) to this world: but be ye transformed (metamorphosis; or attain to a complete and radical inward change and becoming a totally different individual)  by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove (only when we are radically changed can we then test, approve and possess for ourselves the mature, well pleasing, and good will of God) what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Transformation is the same word used for the metamorphosis of a tadpole to a frog or a caterpillar to a butterfly.  If we do not pay the price to affect that transformation, we will never be free.

Acts 20:24  But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.

Of no account do I make or hold my life in honor, so that I may complete my course on the horse track on which I am racing upon with joy, and the ministry that I received from the Lord to testify fully and thoroughly of the glad tidings of the grace of God.

Philippians 3:12  Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after ( BIBLICAL WORD FOR PERSECUTION) , if that I may apprehend  (GRASP AND SEIZE) that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

I persecute, pursue, and overtake, in hope that I can grasp, seize, and make my own, all of what is contained in what Christ originally grasped and seized me for.

Philippians  3:13  Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

Therefore, I neglect and no longer care for what is behind me. I stretch myself out and towards, and run swiftly after what is before me. The direction being, the mark of the goal of the high price of unbroken fellowship of Christ’s resurrection life, and the hope of His calling for me.

1 Timothy 6:19  Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Seize and grab to, pull in, and make it our own possession.  Eternal life while we are on the earth is the resurrection life.  It does not come magically to us but must be seized and pulled in though obedience.

Matthew 25:1  Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.

Matthew 25:3  They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:

Took  from the Greek word to receive. To get, possess, and make my own. The foolish virgins did not obtain, and possessed the fullness of the Spirit.

Galatians 4:19  My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,

Gal 6:15  For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth(inward strength and force, to have strength to overcome health, ability, capacity) any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

Only Christ being formed and birthed in us is of any capacity or ability for us to overcome and get the spiritual victory.

“A Jell-O Forehead”

Ezekiel 3:4  And He said unto me, “Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with My words unto them.

5  For thou art not sent to a people of strange speech and of a hard language, but to the house of Israel,

6  not to many people of strange speech and of a hard language, whose words thou canst not understand. Surely, had I sent thee to them, they would have hearkened unto thee.

7  But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee, for they will not hearken unto Me; for all the house of Israel are impudent and hardhearted.

8  Behold, I have made thy face strong against their faces, and thy forehead strong against their foreheads.

9  As an adamant, harder than flint, have I made thy forehead. Fear them not, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.”

In chapter three, Ezekiel receives God’s prophetical calling.  God instructs him  that he would not be sent to a land far away, but would preach to his very own Jewish people.

The Lord furthermore tells Ezekiel not to fear their backbiting comments and arrogant gazes.  He has made the prophet’s forehead harder than adamant, and harder than theirs.

Adamant is a stone, a gem. It is denoted as tougher in quality than a diamond.

There is no material than can scratch the surface of a diamond, yet the diamond  scratches anything. It is considered as the most hardened of nature’s elements. Yet, the surface of the adamant can be more impenetrable or indurated than the diamond’s.

A person’s forehead communicates many things.

An erect face and forehead is a sign of confidence, determination and purpose.

Look at Luke’s description of Jesus.

Lu 9:53  And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.

A downcast face portrays depression or defeat. Eyes which can’t look at you articulate either insecurity, rejection or dishonesty.

A bull pushes with his forehead.

An individual crushed in spirit hangs his forehead in shame.

God gave me these verses right after my salvation in 1979 as I sat in an empty church.

These words rang loud and true in my spirit. In thirty years it has proven to be one of most dynamic of prophecies.

Back then however, these words appeared as an illusion, a hallucination, or a figment of imagination.

I had been a severe stutterer since I was four.  Rejection, insecurity, terror, and panic were my friends.  I knew nothing else.

I was still on drugs and booze.

I couldn’t speak to three people at a time. I would flee from a ringing phone.

I had the most frail of foreheads. I couldn’t look at anybody in the eye because of the speech impediment.

Like Moses I said, “Who me?”

Thirty  years later, these words have come to pass.

My wife and I do international Bible conferences. I can speak to any number of people. I rarely show recognizable signs of a speech impediment.

The telephone which was my greatest foe, is now a good friend.

I am able to lovingly confront anybody in the midst of an misunderstanding.

I treat the most insignificant and the most famous person equally.

I don’t back down from a challenge as long as I know that God is in it.

Truly God has given me a hard forehead. All glory goes to God and the work of his Holy Spirit.

God, many times, will take an individual’s greatest fears, or weaknesses, his handicaps and flaws and turn them into unconquerable attributes. I’ve seen this so often. This is how He glorifies Himself.

When I see a glaring weakness or handicap when counseling, I tell the person that God will probably raise him  to be just the opposite.

So today, look at your own life.

What is your greatest fear? What is that pesky bondage that you can’t overcome?  What is the handicap that is a thorn to  your side?

If you are truly obedient  to God, He will raise you up to do just the contrary, and probably through many great feats.

Don’t lose hope. Remember me. God gave me a diamond forehead for one of Jell-O.

St. Peter’s Angel and my Hang Out

DISCLAIMER: I won’t disclose places or names of places as to not embarrass anyone who might read today’s blog and recognize what I am talking about.

Acts 12:7  And behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison; and he smote Peter on the side and raised him up, saying, “Arise up quickly.” And his chains fell off from his hands.

8  And the angel said unto him, “Gird thyself and bind on thy sandals.” And so he did. And the angel said unto him, “Cast thy garment about thee and follow me.”

9  And he went out and followed him, and knew not whether what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he saw a vision.

10  When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city, which opened to them of his own accord. And they went out and passed on through one street, and forthwith the angel departed from him.

11  And when Peter had come to himself, he said, “Now I know in truth that the Lord hath sent His angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod and from all the expectations of the people of the Jews.”

I’d  visit a hang out where  men of a city converged to drink and pass the night.

This place had been there forever, or so it seemed.

You’d drive by and see men and women drunk, others reveling , some even stoned.

It had been my practice to visit the hangout, befriend the men and share the gospel in a spontaneous and non-threatening fashion.

I had been nicknamed “ the preacher,”

One night though, things were very different. Some of the men had sniffed cocaine, were high as kites and were very confrontational.

As I mingled, one coked out dude charged me with mal treating my children.

“ I walked past the preacher’s home today and heard one of his kid’s screaming”, he snapped in a heated way.

I knew what had happened. My kids were small in those days. One of my daughters was in the  habit of screaming bloody murder when she did not get her way.

That morning, my wife Mary, had washed her hair and wanted to brush out the knots. Brushing out the kinks of your little girl’s long hair after a bath  can be quiet the ordeal.

Mary had not begun the brushing but my daughter was screaming in its anticipation.

This  guy had walked past my house when this was happening.

“The preacher was beating his kid!”, he rejoined, in a loud voice.

Another coked out dude joined the fray.  “ Yeah, preacher, that’s really bad, what did you do to your kid?”

He began pushing me.

I  expounded on what had occurred to the fifteen men that were there. None of them said a word. Many of them I knew personally.

The loud mouthed and confrontational ones continued  inflaming  the tempers of the others. “ Yeah, we gotta punish the preacher for what he does to his kids!”

One continued to push me around. The others sat in silence, as if their tongues had been cut out.  Not one came to my defense.  I was dumb founded and frightened.

The ring leader retorted, “Let’s hang the preacher!”

With that he found a rope and began to make a noose for my lynching. The other one  kept on pushing me, while several more hurled accusations.

I appealed to the men who knew me the best, “You’ve known me for years! You see me with my children!”

Nothing. The silence was deafening.

Meanwhile the agitator in a corner gleefully continued constructing the noose.

Suddenly, out of nowhere a girl, a teen ager, appeared.  She was a native of the city.

“ Come and follow me”.

She led me past the crowd of the men. Even my agitators were speechless.

“Get in your car and get out here.”

Then she departed from me.

Acts 12:8  And the angel said unto him, “Gird thyself and bind on thy sandals.” And so he did.

And so I did. I never visited this haunt again, needless to say.

This had been Peter’s angel sent to me.

It’s tragically comical that it took a woman, probably the only one in that joint to rescue me. The men who had been friends were cowardly and spineless.

In our global travels, it’s mostly the women who have supported our ministry, while the men have been heartbreakingly absent.

This is one reason I support women in the ministry. It is troublesome that men who argue against their inclusion in the pulpit are sedentary in  the activities of their local congregations.

This story ends on a good note, as with all that God does.

Months later, I saw my noose maker. I said hello, extended my hand and shook his. He stared at me in disbelief, frozen in time, God’s conviction raining on him. Never uttering a word, he walked away. I’ve prayed for him on occasions. I knew he lived in pain.

To this day, I’ve not been able to find my angel who rescued me from the hangout and departed from me to thank her. Maybe in heaven I’ll find out that she was St. Peter’s angel.

A Primer on Faith

We must live through the faith of God

Mark 11:22  And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have  faith in (Have the “God kind” of faith, or the faith OF GOD!) God.

Gal 2:20  I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith, of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Greek: The life which I now live in the flesh, I live in faith, this being the faith which dwells in the Son of God. (Genitive Greek case signifying possession)

The faith flowing through Christ; even the faith that comes out of Christ living continuously in me.

Romans 10:17  So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Rhema word of God.

Greek:  So then faith gets its life from hearing, but the type of hearing, which describes faith, must be exclusively one which comes through the rhema word of God, which is the voice of the Spirit.

John 1:1  In the beginning was the LOGOS (word), and the LOGOS(word) was with God, and the LOGOS(word) was God.

Matthew 12:36  But I say unto you, That every idle RHEMA (word) that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

The “logos” describes “the word of God” as an idea or a concept, usually in a written form.

The “rhema” however is a personally spoken word of revelation, prophecy, or knowledge, through the mouth of God to us, in regards to a particular circumstance.  We have all said at one time or another, “this scripture really leaped out at me”!  This is a “rhema word” given you by the Lord to minister to you in a particular situation.

Gross misunderstanding and ignorance of the distinction between these two types of “words”, lends greatly to the weak state of our church today.  Let us look at some examples that will help us to learn.

Matthew 4:4  But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every RHEMA that proceedeth( from moment to moment) out of the mouth of God.

Romans 10:8  But what saith it? The rhema word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the rhema word of faith, which we preach; (Dative relationship)

Every rhema word represents an itemized description of God’s measure of faith, as He has tailored it for every situation in which He speaks the rhema word into.  It is an account of what the Lord can do within a particular circumstance.

Luke 1:37  For with God nothing( Rhema word) shall be impossible.

(The English is a poor translation:  Greek: For with God every rhema word has the (indwelling) dunamis power to come to pass.

Secondly, the rhema word not only carries with it God’s measure of faith, but also God’s dunamis power.

John 17:8  For I have given unto them the rhema words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

Thirdly, every rhema word reveals the Person of Christ.  As Christ is revealed, the faith and power that He possesses, is manifested along with Him.

Hebrews 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Without faith there is a vacuüm of dunamis power to please God.

The Might and Ability of Faith

Mark 10:27  And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

Greek paraphrase: God is capable and able, and mighty and strong to successfully carry out His will in every affair in heaven and upon the earth.

Luke 18:27  And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.

Greek paraphrase: In all those things that people find impossible to carry out because they have no power, God is able and capable, and strong and mighty to carry out.

Mark 9:23  Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible  to him that believeth.

If you have the ability to believe for something, without allowing for a chronic pattern of doubt to set in, that very thing that you believe for becomes transformed into something, mighty and strong and powerful and capable to get what you are seeking for.

“As” Thou Hast Believed

Matthew 8:13  And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

Matthew 15:28  Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

The word “as” has a powerful connotation in New Testament scriptures.  It is defined by some of the following terms;   As, like, even as, just like, in the same way, and a carbon copy of.

In Matthew eight and thirteen, Jesus in fact tells the centurion, that in the very specific thing that he has targeted his belief for, that very targeted thing he will receive. When we ask in Jesus’ Name, our request must be very specifically targeted to what we want. From the rhema word that Jesus grants us in His name, we find ourselves with a host of things that we can ask from the Lord within the sphere of the rhema word.  Any specific point that we target our request for, believing, which is void of the two types of doubting taught above, we will receive as a specific carbon copy or reduplication of what we requested. The specific thing that we ask for believing is the specific thing that we receive.

Matthew 9:29  Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.( LET IT BECOME OR BE CREATED FOR YOU)

In Matthew nine and twenty-nine the “according to your faith” is very similar to the word “as”. In other words we will receive from the Lord in proportion to our faith.  Receiving is a matter of degrees. The more is the proportion of our faith, to believe without doubting, the greater will be the proportion of our receiving.  Our faith, or lack thereof, directly limits what we will receive or not receive from the Lord.

The Authority of Faith

A very important quality of God’s faith, is that resident within it lies God’s authority to cause circumstances and situations to submit to the faith itself, change them and lines them up to God’s rhema word. Let us analyze three scriptures below.

Matthew 8:13  And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

The so be it done unto thee” is in the Greek imperative mood or the mood of command.  The faith of the centurion has God’s inherent authority to command circumstances to change and line up in accordance to what the centurion specifically targeted for in his request.

Matthew 9:29  Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

The “be it unto you” is in the Greek imperative mood.  In reality what Jesus tells them is that their faith commanded the circumstances that kept them blind to change and line up into God’s normalcy for vision.

Matthew 15:28  Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

Your faith has commanded the future circumstances to line up and submit to and finally give to you what you desire.

The Inner Strength of Faith

Matthew 17:20  And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove (FUTURE MIDDLE INDICATIVE “it will happen without fail by the inherent power resident in faith”)  and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Matthew 21:21  Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done (FUTURE MIDDLE INDICATIVE “it will happen without fail by the inherent power resident in faith”)

Faith In The Perfect Tense

In the beginning of our study, we dealt with the Greek perfect tense.  We discussed that the Greek perfect tense defines an event completed in the past, but its results and impact are eternal, affecting and influencing us today, and in our future.

Matthew 9:22  But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

Hath made the whole is in the Greek perfect tense.  The faith of the women completely healed her with the results that her healing is secure from now, the future, and until the time of her natural death, unless she sins and opens up a door to the enemy.

Mark 5:34  And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

Here Jesus tells the woman “Thy faith has cured you now and forevermore.” The faith itself accomplished it with a completed and everlasting result.  Jesus then tells the woman; “Immediately go into a continual and enduring state of shalom peace brought about by being whole and sound from your plague.

The Causative Action of Faith

Exodus 8:5  And the LORD spake unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch forth thine hand with thy rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs  ( causative faith) to come up upon the land of Egypt.

Mustard Seed Faith

Luke 17:5  And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.

6  And the Lord said, If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say unto this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou planted in the sea; and it should obey you.

Heb 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Mustard seed faith is three-dimensional faith. A grain of mustard is three-dimensional. In Hebrews eleven and one we are told that faith must have substance.  In John one and fourteen we are told that the Word of God must become flesh.

In all of these instances we see that faith must become a reality to us.  More than that, faith must become our ONLY reality. The reality of faith, and the rhema word of God must become OUR ONLY REALITY.  It is what must become three dimensional to us.  Our circumstances must all become two-dimensional and our UNREALITY.

Let us look at a few excerpts from the book of Hebrews.

Hebrews 11:7  By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

Being divinely instructed and admonished about the things that he could not see with human the human eyes.

“The things yet not seen” what was what well known to Noah, or what had a three dimensional substance to him.   The physical world acquired no reality or became simply two-dimensional.

8  By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

He was called was in the present tense.

He obeyed-   Greek: “a military submission to hearing”.

He went out; As we go out with the word of God.

Not knowing ‘Having nothing in the physical realm which was set and standing before him so that he could grasp and follow.  He had no acquaintance with what God had called him to do.

10    For he looked(was expecting) for a city which hath foundations, whose builder (technician or craftsman)  and maker ( “the worker for the people,” as technician and craftsman of the new foundations which only faith builds) is God.

27  By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

Moses dominated and endured by seeing with discernment in the Spirit what was invisible or void of discernment in the natural or to the human eye. His substance was the rhema word of God.  The natural world was not a reality to him.

The Faith of Abraham

Romans 4:12  And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk(Greek: march as a soldier ) in the steps ( footprints) of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.

Romans 4:17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead (corpses), and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

Greek translation and my paraphrase; Abraham once and for all, (aorist tense) believed God.  Who is the God whom he believed in?

Abraham believed in the God whose nature is to continuously give life to the dead i.e. (Greek; Circumstances which are so dead that they are corpse like).

He is also the God who continuously calls the things which are not, as if they are.  (The word “as” is a very interesting word.  It means in the same way as, or having the same content).

Romans 4:19  And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead ( now in a permanent state of a corpse) , when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness ( the corpse-likeness) of Sara’s womb:

He considered his own body now in a state of a corpse and the corpse of the womb of Sarah.

11    Through faith also Sara herself received strength(received dunamis power) to conceive( to lay down a foundation of) seed( spermatos), and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

12  Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

My Greek paraphrase Therefore also from one were born (many) though that specific one is a corpse; and these many, in relationship to the stars of heaven, equal to the number of the fullness of their multitude; and just as the sand by the side of the shore of the sea is so much in number that arithmetic cannot calculate it.

Understanding Aorist Faith

Mat 8:8  The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word ( Greek: a word)) only, and my servant shall be healed.

9  For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go (aorist), and he goeth; ( present ) and to another, Come,( present) and he cometh;( present) and to my servant, Do this(aorist), and he doeth it(present).

10   Then Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you.

In verse eight of Matthew eight, we find the centurion dialoguing with Jesus and acknowledging that His rhema word spoken in regards to the sickness of his servant would result in his complete healing.  The phrase “shall be healed”, is in the indicative mood.

If you can remember from our earlier studies, this Greek mood describes a statement of fact, an absolute certainty, and a done deal.  The centurion is in fact relaying to Jesus that he is aware that the Lord’s rhema word will carry out with absolute certainty all that it intends to do.  This is what deeply touched the Lord.

The “aorist tense” in the Greek, can be compared to our “past tense” in the English. Simply speaking, it describes a past occurrence.  However, the Greek aorist tense is stronger than our English past tense.

This verb tense has the element of “punctiliar action.” This fancy word in reality means nothing more than a “punctuation” or “punctuation mark” in the succession of time.  Can you see the similarity between punctiliar and punctuation? Whenever we place a question mark, a period, and a comma as we write, we insert one mark with our pens in the sequence of time and go on with our writing. This one single event jotted down in one moment of time, is called punctiliar action.  I call the use of the aorist tense, “punctuation in time.”

The present tense describes action which is presently and continuously occurring in the here and now i.e.; “at this very moment.”

Mark 11:22  And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith(Present) in ( Have the “God kind” of faith, or the faith OF GOD!) God. (God is in the genitive Greek case of “God possessing something”, hence His possessing faith).

23  For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed(Aorist), and be thou cast(Aorist) into the sea; and shall not doubt(Aorist) in his heart, but shall believe(Aorist) that those things which he saith shall come to pass(Present); he shall have whatsoever he saith.( future indicative)

24  Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe(present) that ye receive them(present), and ye shall have them.(future indicative)

Hebrews 11:29  By faith they passed through(A thorough stepping through) the Red sea as by dry land: ( just like if going through dry land) which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned. (Were swallowed up;the outcome of having no faith)

Hebrews 11:30  By faith (The domain and instrumentality of faith ) the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about ( encircled upon) seven days.

Hebrews 11:31  By faith the harlot Rahab perished not (In absolutely no way was destroyed together; the outcome of faith)  with them that believed not (non-compliant or in persuadable to the voice of God; non-Christians and Christians alike), when she had received the spies with peace.

“Take Me To The Jesus House”

Once again, to respect the identity of Native American friends, I will keep  details of this blog, generic in content.

Years back, I visited a Native American Nation in the southwest part of our country.

The Spaniards who colonized this region and Mexico, executed many atrocities in the name of Jesus Christ .

Consequently, some  Native American Nations have barred their doors to the open preaching of the gospel.

This particular tribe was one. The gospel could not be openly preached within its borders.

One day, my eye caught sight of a flyer stuck to the side of a building.

The tribe was fundraising money for a young member, a boy dying from leukemia. The  collection was to be used for a bone marrow transplant.

God burdened me to pray for this kid whom I had not met.

Every day, Jesus would tell me to fast and pray. For more than a month I did it by  getting on my knees.

When God told me stop, He then told me to do something more extreme.

“I want you to go the tribe’s administration office and ask if you can pray for this boy in the Name of Jesus.”

“ How utterly uncomfortable is this?”, I thought.

The white man is not allowed in the reservation after sundown.

To openly preach the gospel of Jesus Christ was exclusively prohibited, and this through a white man!  OMG!

If you want to discuss an awkward moment this was it.

I tried to justify all reasons for not going  but knew that I had to obey the Spirit.

Around noon I drove up to the office.  I was met with the usual busyness of a government building. I was the only white man there.

“Can I help you?” a big man asked.

“Yes sir, I saw the flyer about the boy who has leukemia and needs the bone marrow transplant. Can you help me?”

I was fearful, not knowing what to expect.

“I am the boy’s uncle,” he replied.

I could not believe that among all the people,  it was this kid’s uncle who met me.

“Well sir, my name is Jose Alvarez and I am a Christian. I am not here to preach the gospel or try to convert you. I have four little children and when I saw the picture of your nephew my heart broke. I can’t imagine what it is to have one of my children sick like this.  God uses me in healing, and I would like to pray for him in the Name of Jesus.”

As I laid my request before him, tears flowed down my cheeks, my heart broken by God.  My speech was feeble and faltering.

I well understood Paul’s words.

1Co 2:3  And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

I anticipated this man blasting me out of the water.  I imagined him screaming and drawing a number of officials who’d grab and kick me out the door of the building.

With a soft voice the man replied “ Sure, you can pray for him. I will arrange a time when you can come back.”

I could not believe what I had heard.  A white man praying in the Name of Jesus within this tribe, one of the most resistant to the gospel!   This was totally unheard of, for sure!  It was just too unbelievable!

I was permitted on three occasions to visit the boy’s home. His extended family, many of them elderly folk,  came to watch  me pray. Most of them did not speak a lick of English. They came in  Native American regalia exclusive to their nation.

The boy  would curse at me in the foulest of language as I prayed. Other times he’d run around the living room. The family gawked at me never saying a word.

2Co 11:16  I say again, Let no man think me a fool; if otherwise, yet as a fool receive me, that I may boast myself a little.

I know what it is to be a fool for Christ!  LOL!

After the third consultation I was not allowed to continue. What a miracle had transpired, though, against every human odd!

A few months after, the boy got his bone marrow transplant.

The hospital touted his recovery as the fastest discharged bone marrow patient in its history.

The cancer was gone.

His family befriended ours.

We became very close  and maintained our relationships for the next six years until our departure to Africa.

This boy grew, totally healed and cancer free.

He would demand his uncle take him to the local church.

“Take me to the Jesus house” he’d say, as he sat still in the Great Spirit’s presence.

I’m Gonna Kill The Bear

Charles:    We’ll have to distract him and trap him, but it can be done.
Do you believe it, Bob?
You believe it?
Robert:    I don’t know Charles.
I don’t think it’ll work.
Charles:   It will work!
Robert:    No!
Charles:   It will work.  What one man can do another can do.
Robert:    You can’t kill the bear, Charles.  He’s…
He’s ahead of us all the time, like he’s reading our minds.
He’s stalking us, for God’s sakes!
Charles:   You want to die out here, huh? Well, then die.
But I tell you what… I’m not gonna die. No, sirree. I’m not gonna die. No, I’m gonna kill the bear. Say it, “I’m gonna kill the bear. I’m gonna kill the bear!” Say it!
Robert:   I’m gonna kill the bear.

This dialogue comes from a great movie, “The Edge” with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin.

When I saw this movie I was battling rejection from years as a severe stutterer.

I was hassled by massive insecurity issues.

The devils of fear, which had tormented me from childhood, still played mayhem with my thoughts.

The first rays of self-esteem were breaking through cobwebs of profound rejection.

I had dwelt must of my life in the house of comparing myself to others and the dungeon of self-criticism.

As this famous dialogue between Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins transpired, God broke through.

Trapped in icy Alaskan tundra after an airplane crash, Hopkins and Baldwin are being stalked by a killer grizzly bear (Bart, the Bear).  Baldwin (Robert) is convinced that he and Hopkins (Charles) will come to a ghastly end in the teeth of this huge creature.

Baldwin paralyzed by dread is angrily challenged by Hopkins and his famous words.

“What one man can do another can do…” . But I tell you what… I’m not gonna die. No, sirree. I’m not gonna die. No, I’m gonna kill the bear. Say it, “I’m gonna kill the bear. I’m gonna kill the bear!” Say it!

I’m gonna kill the bear!!!   I’m gonna kill the bear!!!

At that instant and in this scene, God’s lightning bolt knocked me off  from the horse of fear as His voice boomed into my heart.

It was the beginning of my road to victory.
